Joshimath, on the Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highways (NH-7), it is an overnight halt for the people visiting the shrines at Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib and tourist destinations Auli and the Valley of Flowers. It is major challenge due to land subsidence.

*Experts have also suggested replating in the region to retain soil capacity.
* Drainage system and sewer planning needs to be redeveloped.
Reason behind sinking:
*Joshimath's location on a fault line makes it highly vulnerable to sinking because of tectonic activity.
* Increase in construction activities and hydroelectric projects.
* The town has low soil bearing capacity due to past landslide.
* Unplanned drainage system causing water seepage inside ground.
* Flashflood in the Rishiganga and Dhauliganga rivers.
