Joshimath

 Joshimath, on the Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highways (NH-7), it is an overnight halt for the people visiting the shrines at Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib and tourist destinations Auli and the Valley of Flowers. It is major challenge due to land subsidence. 

About:

* Joshimath is a town in chamoli district of Uttarakhand. 

* It is one of the tour places where Mutts were established by Adi Shankaracharya. 

* Joshimath is also the gateway to Hemkund Sahib, the sikh pilgrimage site. 

* Joshimath is also of great strategic importance to the Indian Armed Forces. 

Preventive Measures:

*Affected residence are being shifted to safer locations. 

*Experts have also suggested replating in the region to retain soil capacity. 

* Drainage system and sewer planning needs to be redeveloped. 

Reason behind sinking:

*Joshimath's location on a fault line makes it highly vulnerable to sinking because of tectonic activity. 

* Increase in construction activities and hydroelectric projects. 

* The town has low soil bearing capacity due to past landslide. 

* Unplanned drainage system causing water seepage inside ground. 

* Flashflood in the Rishiganga and Dhauliganga rivers.
