*A buffer state is a country lying between two rival or potentially hostile greater powers. It's existance can sometimes be thought to prevent conflict between them.
* It's concept coined in the 17th Century, when the major Europeans powers of England, France, Spain and Portugal started exploring and exploting vast tracts of land on foreign continents, and establishing their own empire.
* Poland and other states between Germany and the Soviet Union have sometimes been described as buffer states, with reference both to when they were non-communist states before World War 2, and to when they were communist states after World War 2.
